Eric Dane, Grey’s Anatomy Star, Dies at 53 After Brave ALS Battle
Eric Dane, best known for his role as the charming Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy, has passed away at the age of 53. His family confirmed his death Thursday, following a courageous and very public battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, less than a year after his diagnosis.
ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that gradually robs patients of muscle control and mobility. Dane first noticed symptoms more than a year before his diagnosis, initially mistaking hand weakness for fatigue from texting. His breakout came in 2005 when he appeared as Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy. His portrayal of the “McSteamy” heartthrob captured audiences immediately, earning him a series regular spot and a place in television history. Later, Dane took on more complex roles, including the strict father Cal Jacobs on HBO’s Euphoria.
