Extreme Fire Danger Grips Victoria as Heat and Winds Collide

Victoria is bracing for a dangerous day as extreme fire conditions tighten their grip across much of the state and authorities are warning that even a single spark could escalate fast.

Temperatures are climbing sharply, especially in northern communities. Towns like Mildura are set to push past 40 degrees Celsius, while other regional centres are hovering in the high 30s. Melbourne itself is forecast to reach the low 30s. On its own, that kind of heat is tough. But combined with powerful north-westerly winds gusting up to 40 kilometres per hour, it becomes a serious fire threat.

What makes this situation more concerning is the dryness. Large parts of Victoria have recorded almost no meaningful rainfall for weeks. Some areas in the north-west have barely seen a drop since late December. Even Melbourne has experienced one of its driest starts to a year in more than a decade. The bush is dry. Grasslands are brittle. And fuel loads remain high, especially in areas that were untouched by earlier fires this season.

A Total Fire Ban has been declared across most Victorian fire districts. That means no open flames, no outdoor fires and strict restrictions throughout the day. Emergency services are clear. If a fire starts under these conditions, it could spread quickly and become extremely difficult to control.

Several major fires that burned through parts of the state earlier this year are still contained but not completely extinguished. Officials say flare-ups remain possible, especially in strong winds. Communities near bushland and open grass are being urged to review their fire plans, stay alert and be ready to act quickly if conditions change.

There is some relief in sight. A cooler south-westerly change is expected to move across the state from mid-morning, reaching Melbourne around midday and pushing further north and east through the afternoon. That shift could drop temperatures significantly by the following day. But authorities stress that today is the critical window.

Victoria is no stranger to devastating bushfires. History has shown how fast conditions like this can turn catastrophic. That is why officials are urging vigilance, preparation and strict compliance with fire bans.
