Family Day 2026 in Toronto: What’s Open, What’s Closed and What You Need to Know

Family Day has arrived in Toronto and across the city families are asking the same question right now, what’s actually open and what’s shut down?

This provincial holiday, observed on the third Monday of February in Ontario, is designed to give people a winter break. Schools are closed. Most government offices are closed. Banks are closed. And many major shopping centres, including Yorkdale, CF Fairview Mall and Scarborough Town Centre, will not open their doors.

But the city is far from quiet.

Some retail locations are welcoming shoppers, including the CF Toronto Eaton Centre, operating on reduced holiday hours. Most movie theatres are open, along with many pharmacies. However, if you’re planning to stock up on alcohol, you’ll need to adjust your plans. LCBO and The Beer Store locations are closed for the day.

For families looking to get out and explore, many of Toronto’s biggest attractions are open. The Toronto Zoo, Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada, the CN Tower, the Royal Ontario Museum and the Art Gallery of Ontario are all welcoming visitors. Casa Loma is also open, offering both general admission and special experiences like afternoon tea and escape rooms.

Outdoor options are also available, weather permitting. Public skating rinks across the city are open, including Nathan Phillips Square. The Bentway Skate Trail is operating and the city’s Skate Lending Library at Mel Lastman Square is offering free equipment rentals. Earl Bales Ski and Snowboard Centre is also open for those looking to stay active.

Transit services are running on holiday schedules. The TTC is operating reduced service, similar to a Sunday schedule, while GO Transit and the UP Express are following Saturday schedules. Travelers heading to Toronto Island Park should expect possible delays due to modified ferry service and winter ice conditions.

Garbage collection continues as usual and Canada Post mail delivery will proceed because it is a federal service.

There’s also a bonus for outdoor enthusiasts. Across Ontario, residents can fish without a licence during the Family Day weekend, though conservation limits still apply.

So while some doors are closed, many others are open, offering everything from museums and skating to family-friendly events across the GTA.

As the holiday continues, stay with us for updates on weather, transit changes and city services and keep watching for everything you need to plan your day with confidence.
