Fierce Winds Knock Out Power Across Utah, Thousands Affected
Strong winds have swept across Utah, leaving thousands without electricity and prompting emergency road restrictions. The storm system moving through the state has brought a dangerous mix of heavy winds, snow and rain, challenging both residents and authorities alike.
In northern Utah, the Salt Lake Valley has been hit particularly hard, with over 1,600 customers reporting outages early Tuesday. Vernal and parts of southern and eastern Utah also experienced disruptions. Tooele County saw one of the largest impacts, with nearly 14,000 homes losing power before crews restored service by early morning. The utility company, Rocky Mountain Power, attributes these widespread outages primarily to the intense gusts, which in some areas have exceeded 60 miles per hour. Trees, power lines and other infrastructure have been damaged, including reports of downed trees in Layton.

The National Weather Service has warned that these high winds will continue as the winter storm moves deeper into the Beehive State. With gusts that strong, even lighter vehicles face serious risks on exposed roads, prompting the Utah Department of Transportation to impose restrictions on high-profile vehicles, including semis and RVs, along I-80 in Tooele County. Certain highways, such as State Route 143 near Brian Head and State Route 14 near Cedar City, have been closed in both directions to protect drivers. Traction law restrictions are also in effect in Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons as snowfall accumulates, with up to eight inches expected in the upper canyon roads and heavier snow overnight, reaching up to ten inches.

Residents are being urged to exercise caution, avoid travel where possible and stay updated on restoration efforts and road closures.
