High Winds and Extreme Cold Set to Slam Eastern Shore This Weekend
Residents across the Eastern Shore are bracing for a powerful and potentially dangerous weather system heading into the weekend. Forecasters are warning of a combination of strong winds and plunging temperatures that could make travel and outdoor activity hazardous.
A High Wind Watch has been issued for Accomack and Northampton counties starting Saturday morning, with sustained northwest winds expected between 30 and 40 miles per hour. Gusts could reach up to 55 miles per hour, strong enough to topple trees, damage power lines and trigger scattered power outages. High-profile vehicles like trucks, buses and RVs will be particularly vulnerable, making travel difficult across exposed areas. Officials are urging residents to secure any loose outdoor items, including patio furniture, trash bins and decorations, ahead of the gusts.

As Saturday night approaches, dangerously cold air will move into the region, prompting an Extreme Cold Watch from Saturday evening through Sunday morning. Wind chills could plunge to 10 degrees below zero, creating conditions that are unsafe for prolonged outdoor exposure. Hypothermia and frostbite become real risks under these conditions and forecasters are advising residents to dress in layers, wear hats, gloves and face coverings and keep pets indoors. Older adults, children and those with health conditions should be monitored closely.
Emergency management officials are also emphasizing fire and carbon monoxide safety. Portable heaters should be used carefully and generators or grills must never be operated indoors, as carbon monoxide poisoning is a serious risk in these conditions. The National Weather Service cautions that forecasts could change quickly and additional alerts may be issued as the weekend progresses.
While the extreme cold will dominate early Saturday night, calmer and sunnier conditions are expected to follow as high pressure moves in, offering some relief by Sunday afternoon. Still, this weekend’s weather serves as a reminder of how quickly conditions can turn dangerous, especially when high winds combine with sub-zero temperatures.
This is a developing situation that affects both safety and daily life across the Eastern Shore. Stay informed with the latest updates, follow official weather advisories closely and take precautions to protect yourself, your family and your community through this severe weather event.
