Jonathan Roumie Ditches Jesus Role for Unexpected Rom-Com Turn

Jonathan Roumie, best known worldwide for his role as Jesus in The Chosen , is stepping into completely new territory. He’s leaving behind the iconic sandals and robes to play Neil, a compassionate, aspiring therapist, in the new romantic comedy Solo Mio . The film, set against the charming backdrop of Rome, hits theaters across the U.S. this week.

In Solo Mio , Roumie joins a cast led by Kevin James, who plays Matt Taylor, an art teacher left at the altar. Rather than canceling his dream honeymoon, Taylor decides to go ahead, navigating Rome on his own. Along the way, he meets Neil, Roumie’s character and Julian, played by Kim Coates. Together, they form an unlikely trio, exploring friendship, guidance and emotional growth amid the humor and chaos of the city.

For Roumie, this role marks a significant shift. After portraying Jesus on-screen since 2019 and taking on the real-life figure Lonnie Frisbee in Jesus Revolution , he describes this as a refreshing change. “It was nice to play a character that is not shouldering the weight of the world,” he said. Yet despite the shift in genre, Roumie finds a connection between his characters: a desire to help others heal. Neil, like Jesus, carries a big heart, offering support and guidance to those around him.

The actor also highlights a broader cultural purpose behind the film. He emphasizes the importance of portraying positive male friendships in today’s society, countering what he sees as a persistent negative depiction of masculinity. For Roumie, Solo Mio

Roumie’s collaboration with Kevin James extends beyond the set. Their friendship began during a Lenten spiritual retreat and two years later, James invited Roumie to join the project. Roumie describes working with James as an opportunity to combine artistic craft with shared values, adding depth and authenticity to the film’s heartwarming story.

While fans may initially struggle to see Roumie beyond his iconic role as Jesus, he encourages them to embrace the change. He believes the film maintains the ethos and spirit consistent with the work he feels called to do as both an artist and a person of faith.

Solo Mio represents more than just a career pivot—it reflects Roumie’s commitment to meaningful storytelling and the value of empathy, friendship and personal growth. As audiences follow Matt, Neil and Julian through laughter and life lessons in Rome, the film offers a gentle reminder of the power of connection, compassion and rediscovering joy in unexpected places.
