Kolkata’s First Rain in Months Brings Chill Before Holi Heat

A sudden splash of rain has broken a long dry spell in Kolkata, bringing a brief reprieve from the heat and a noticeable drop in temperatures. Tuesday’s showers marked the first rainfall the city has seen in nearly four months, pushing the maximum down by over four degrees Celsius and dropping the night low below 20.

Meteorologists say this dip is temporary. The rain was triggered by moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal meeting a trough stretching across south Bengal to north coastal Andhra Pradesh. This combination brought light showers to Kolkata and nearby districts, including Howrah, South 24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas. In total, the Alipore Met office recorded just over six millimeters of rain by late evening, the first in the city since October 30.

While the morning chill lingered, the sky is expected to clear up from Wednesday, setting the stage for warmer, dry conditions just in time for Dol and Holi celebrations. Temperatures are forecast to rise steadily over the coming days, with highs climbing back toward 30 degrees Celsius, while low humidity will keep the heat from becoming oppressive.

South Bengal residents can expect mostly dry weather for the next week. Early mornings and late evenings may still carry a slight chill, but daytime warmth will gradually become more noticeable. North Bengal’s hilly districts may experience light fog, but rainfall is not expected there either.

The change in wind patterns is key to this shift. Southerly and south-easterly winds previously brought moisture and humidity from the Bay of Bengal, triggering the recent showers. Now, a dry westerly system is moving in, ensuring that rising temperatures won’t coincide with high humidity, making the weather comfortable for festival-goers.

For Kolkata, this pattern reflects a typical February weather cycle, though rain is rare in certain years. Last year, February saw nearly 48 millimeters of rainfall, mostly concentrated on a single day, while 2023 and 2018 were almost entirely dry. This year, the brief showers have reset the city’s mercury, offering a short-lived cool-down before the seasonal rise in heat.

As we move toward March, temperatures will gradually climb, skies will stay mostly clear and the festive colors of Dol and Holi will arrive under warm, dry conditions. For residents and visitors, this means a comfortable start to the spring celebrations, with no rain interruptions on the horizon.
