Paradise Season 2 Expands the World, but Struggles to Land Its Story
Sterling K. Brown is back and the world of Paradise is bigger than ever, but bigger doesn’t always mean better. Season two of this post-apocalyptic Hulu drama takes viewers beyond the underground bunker that defined the first season, opening up a vast, sometimes chaotic landscape of stories and characters. Xavier, Brown’s Secret Service protagonist, finally steps into the outside world, leaving the safety—and the mystery—of the bunker behind. The possibilities seemed endless. What would he discover? Would he find his wife, Teri? New friends or new dangers?
The season wastes no time expanding the universe. We meet Annie, played by Shailene Woodley, navigating the end of civilization in a hauntingly quiet Graceland and we encounter doomsday preppers, orphaned children and charismatic scavengers. These new faces bring compelling moments and when the show focuses on the emotional journeys of its characters, it shines. Brown’s Xavier is desperate and human, Annie’s solo survival is gripping and the emotional stakes remain high.

Despite these challenges, the season delivers on emotional intensity. Moments of human connection, resilience and rediscovery keep viewers invested. Yet structural issues and overreliance on flashbacks can stall momentum, making the storytelling feel uneven. The show’s ambition is undeniable, but at times the patchwork plot and scattered character arcs undercut its impact.
