Robin Windsor Inquest: Strictly Star’s Death Ruled Suicide After Mental Health Struggles
A heartbreaking conclusion has now been delivered in the death of former Strictly Come Dancing professional Robin Windsor and an inquest jury has ruled that he took his own life following a serious deterioration in his mental health.
The 44-year-old dancer, best known for his appearances on the BBC’s flagship ballroom show, was found dead in a hotel room in west London in February 2024. Now, two years on, a coroner’s court has heard detailed evidence about the struggles he faced behind the scenes and the jury concluded that a complex build-up of emotional and professional pressures led to his death.
Robin Windsor joined Strictly Come Dancing in 2010 and quickly became a familiar face to millions of viewers. He danced with celebrities including Patsy Kensit, Anita Dobson, Lisa Riley and Deborah Meaden. On screen, he was vibrant, charismatic and full of warmth. But away from the spotlight, the inquest heard that he struggled deeply after being dropped from the show.
Jurors were told he was vulnerable to rejection, both emotionally and professionally. Friends and former partners described how losing his role on Strictly was a turning point. Evidence suggested that financial pressures, mounting debts, loneliness, relationship breakdowns and a lack of consistent mental health support all contributed to a long decline. The jury described it as an accumulation of factors that intensified existing depression.

The court also heard that Windsor had experienced childhood trauma and ongoing emotional insecurity. Those close to him said that after leaving the show, his confidence faded and his mental health became increasingly fragile. What audiences saw on television was only part of the story.
In a statement released after the verdict, his family expressed profound sadness but also gratitude for the compassion shown to them since his passing. They said they now hope to begin rebuilding their lives and they thanked everyone who has remembered him with love.
The BBC said the entire Strictly family remains deeply saddened, describing Windsor as a much-loved member of the team both on and off air.
This case matters far beyond one television programme. It shines a light on the pressures faced by performers in highly competitive industries and it raises urgent questions about long-term mental health support, especially after careers change or public roles end.
