Sardinia’s Air Travel Shake-Up: New Routes, Tickets Soon Available

Flights connecting Sardinia to mainland Italy are set to expand, as Aeroitalia steps in to operate five out of six key routes under the island’s public service obligation program. Starting March 29th, tickets for these routes will soon be on sale, offering travelers more options to fly to and from Olbia, Cagliari and Alghero.

The regional transport authorities have finalized the plans for the main routes from Olbia to Milan and Rome and Cagliari to Rome. Interestingly, these flights will operate without any regional compensation, meaning the airline will run the service at its own cost. This approach allows the government to redirect resources toward other transport initiatives while ensuring essential connectivity for Sardinia.

Aeroitalia emerged as the sole bidder for several routes, including Cagliari-Milan and Alghero-Rome. While final operational approvals are still underway for these flights, ticket sales are expected shortly after the remaining checks are completed. The Alghero-Milan route remains unresolved, with the tender deserted. In the meantime, ITA Airways will continue operating this route until October, providing a temporary solution while authorities explore a more stable long-term plan.

Regional officials emphasize that the focus of the new tender process has shifted. Companies are no longer selected purely on price. Instead, the region is prioritizing quality of service and reliability, aiming to ensure travelers experience higher standards across all routes. This marks a notable change in strategy, reflecting a broader commitment to improving Sardinia’s air connectivity and supporting both tourism and local business growth.

For residents and visitors, these changes mean more predictable schedules, potentially lower costs and an expanded network of flights linking Sardinia’s major airports to Italy’s largest cities. For the local economy, improved air travel access could boost tourism during the peak season and facilitate easier business travel, strengthening economic ties with the mainland.

While one route remains unresolved, the rapid rollout of ticket sales for five routes signals a significant step forward in Sardinia’s transport planning. Travelers planning to visit the island or move between its airports can now look forward to enhanced options and smoother travel logistics.

Stay tuned as we continue to monitor these developments, including ticket availability and any updates on the remaining route. Keep watching for the latest information on Sardinia’s evolving air travel landscape and what it means for residents, tourists and businesses alike.
