South Africa Survive Double Super Over Thriller Against Afghanistan
Cricket fans have just witnessed one of the most dramatic finishes in T20 World Cup history and it took not one, but two Super Overs to separate South Africa and Afghanistan in Ahmedabad.
This was a match that refused to produce a winner in normal time. South Africa set a strong total of 187 for six from their 20 overs. Quinton de Kock laid the foundation with a composed half-century, Ryan Rickelton accelerated beautifully and there were valuable late runs from David Miller and Marco Jansen. It looked competitive, but on a good batting surface, it was far from safe.
Afghanistan came out swinging. Rahmanullah Gurbaz played an explosive innings at the top, striking boundaries and sixes with confidence and power. At one stage, Afghanistan were right in the contest, but South Africa’s bowlers clawed their way back. Lungi Ngidi struck at key moments and the Proteas tightened the screws in the middle overs. Still, Afghanistan kept pushing and in the final over of regulation play, they levelled the scores. 187 each. Game tied.

Then came the chaos.
The first Super Over produced another deadlock. Afghanistan posted 17 without loss. South Africa matched it, losing a wicket but squeezing home to tie again. The tension inside the stadium was electric. Every ball felt like it carried the weight of the tournament.
So we went again.
In the second Super Over, South Africa exploded. Miller and Stubbs found the boundary with clean, fearless hitting, racing to 23 without loss in just six balls. Afghanistan’s reply began badly, losing Mohammad Nabi early. Gurbaz briefly reignited hope with powerful strikes, but Keshav Maharaj held his nerve and closed it out. Afghanistan finished short. South Africa win after two Super Overs.
This result matters far beyond one match. In a T20 World Cup, net run rate, momentum and belief can define campaigns. For South Africa, this is a statement of resilience. For Afghanistan, it is heartbreak, but also proof that they can push one of the tournament’s strongest sides to the absolute limit.
