Storm Pedro Triggers Snow, Flood Alerts Across UK Amid Bitter Cold Snap
Storm Pedro is tightening its grip across the United Kingdom, bringing a dangerous mix of snow, heavy rain and biting winds that are already disrupting travel and raising fresh flood fears.
Weather warnings are now active across large parts of the country, issued by the Met Office, as this cold snap deepens. Temperatures have plunged well below freezing in northern areas, with parts of north-east Scotland dropping to minus nine degrees Celsius. And while many woke up to frosty, icy mornings, conditions are quickly turning more hazardous as bands of rain and snow push in from the west.
Northern Ireland is facing a messy combination of persistent rain at lower levels and accumulating snow over higher ground, especially across the Sperrins. Wind gusts between 45 and 55 miles per hour are adding to the threat, increasing the risk of travel disruption and localized flooding. Roads could become treacherous very quickly and power cuts are possible in exposed areas.

Further south, southern England is bracing for intense rainfall. In some spots, forecasters say up to 50 millimeters could fall in a short period. That is a serious concern because the ground is already saturated after one of the wettest starts to a year in recent memory. Around 60 flood warnings remain in place and any additional rain could push rivers beyond their limits once again.
As this system tracks north and east, parts of Wales, the Midlands and the southern Pennines are likely to see rain turning to snow, especially above 150 to 200 meters. Over higher elevations, snowfall totals could reach up to 15 centimeters. Even at lower levels, a mix of sleet and wet snow could make driving conditions extremely difficult through the evening and overnight hours.
Health officials are also sounding the alarm. Cold weather alerts remain in effect across most of England, warning that vulnerable people, particularly the elderly and those with existing health conditions, could face increased risks. Cold snaps like this do not just disrupt transport, they place real pressure on healthcare services and communities.
There is some uncertainty in exactly how the system will evolve overnight, but one thing is clear, Storm Pedro is not done yet. Milder air is expected by the weekend, but until then, millions face challenging conditions.
