Winter Storm Warning: Up to 15 cm of Snow and Dangerous Ice to Hit GTA
A powerful winter system is now setting its sights on the Greater Toronto Area and officials are warning that this could turn into a messy and potentially dangerous midweek commute.
Environment Canada has issued a winter storm watch and special weather statements across parts of the GTA, including areas north and east of Toronto. Forecasters say a low-pressure system will move in Wednesday morning, bringing a mix of heavy snow and freezing rain that could last through the evening.
Some communities, including Markham and Richmond Hill, could see between 10 and 15 centimetres of snow. Toronto itself may receive smaller totals, closer to five centimetres, but that is only part of the story. The bigger concern is ice. Several hours of freezing rain are possible, with ice buildup that could reach up to 10 millimetres in some spots. That is enough to make roads, sidewalks and highways extremely slippery.

Visibility may also become a serious issue. Weather officials are warning that snowfall rates could intensify quickly at times, reducing visibility to near zero. That kind of sudden whiteout can make driving especially dangerous, even for experienced winter drivers.
And there is another layer to this storm. As temperatures fluctuate and rain mixes with snow, melting ice combined with fresh precipitation could create localized flooding in areas with poor drainage. Conservation authorities in parts of southern Ontario are already monitoring rising water levels in creeks and low-lying regions.
So what does this mean for residents? Travel delays are likely. Public transit could face disruptions. Flights in and out of Toronto could also be affected depending on how the system tracks. There is still some uncertainty in the exact path of the storm and that means snowfall totals could shift.
This is another reminder that winter in Canada can change quickly and dramatically. Even a few centimetres of snow combined with ice can disrupt one of North America’s busiest metropolitan regions.
Officials are urging people to allow extra travel time, check on vulnerable neighbours and prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Keep your devices charged in case of brief power outages and stay updated with official advisories.
This storm is still developing and conditions could evolve hour by hour. Stay with us for continuing coverage and real-time updates as this winter system moves across the GTA and beyond.
