Canadiens Sign Luke Mittelstadt: NHL Dreams Take a Major Step
The Montreal Canadiens have officially added a new name to their defensive roster, signing 23-year-old Luke Mittelstadt to a two-year, entry-level contract. Mittelstadt, the younger brother of Boston Bruins forward Casey Mittelstadt, has spent four full seasons at the University of Minnesota, where he established himself as a reliable, two-way defenseman. Over his NCAA career, he totaled 80 points in 152 games, showing consistency in both offense and defensive responsibility.
This season, Mittelstadt led all Gophers defensemen with 21 points in 36 games, including two goals and 19 assists, setting a career high in assists. He also served as one of three team captains, highlighting his leadership both on and off the ice. His experience extends internationally, having represented the United States at the 2023 World Junior Championship, where he helped his team secure a bronze medal.

Originally drafted in the seventh round, 197th overall, in the 2023 NHL Draft, Mittelstadt has faced a long road to the professional level. Passed over in consecutive drafts before finally being selected by Montreal, he now gets the opportunity to transition to pro hockey with the Laval Rocket in the American Hockey League for the remainder of the 2025-26 season. The Rocket, currently leading the North Division, provide a competitive environment for him to adjust to the speed and physicality of the professional game.
While Mittelstadt is considered undersized for an NHL defenseman at 5-foot-11, his hockey IQ, positioning and playmaking ability make him a valuable depth prospect. In a Canadiens organization rich with defensive talent, his pathway to a full-time NHL role may be limited, but he offers a potential call-up option in the coming seasons. After his contract concludes in 2028, he will be a restricted free agent, leaving the door open for future negotiations depending on his development.
For Montreal, this signing strengthens their prospect pipeline and reinforces the depth of their defensive corps. With the Canadiens vying for another playoff run this season and aiming to build sustainable success, adding a mature, skilled young defenseman like Mittelstadt could pay dividends down the line.
Fans will be watching closely as he begins his professional journey in Laval, adjusting to the pace and style of the AHL while positioning himself for an eventual NHL opportunity.
