Colorado QB Dominiq Ponder Dies at 23 in Tragic Crash Before Spring Practice
A promising young college quarterback is gone in an instant and tonight the college football community is trying to process a heartbreaking loss.
Dominiq Ponder, a 23-year-old quarterback for the University of Colorado, has died in a single-car crash in Boulder County. According to state authorities, Ponder was driving a 2023 Tesla in the early morning hours when he lost control on a curve. The vehicle crossed lanes, broke through a guardrail, struck a utility pole and rolled down an embankment. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators say speed is believed to have been a factor and the crash remains under review.
Ponder was a native of Opa-locka, Florida and began his college career at Bethune-Cookman before transferring to Colorado. At Colorado, he served as a backup quarterback and appeared in two games last season. On paper, his statistics were limited. But inside the locker room, teammates and coaches say his impact was anything but small.

Colorado head coach Deion Sanders described Ponder as one of his favorites, a natural leader who was respected and loved by those around him. Offensive coordinator Brennan Marion spoke about the shock of receiving the call and the deep pain felt within the team. Athletic director Rick George called him a player who embodied passion, toughness and intelligence. Counseling resources are now being made available to players and staff as the program copes with the loss.
The timing adds another layer of sorrow. Colorado was set to begin spring practice, a period that signals hope and preparation for a new season. Instead, the team is coming together in grief.
This tragedy is also a stark reminder of how quickly life can change. College athletes are often seen only through the lens of performance, depth charts and game highlights. But they are young men with families, dreams and futures still unfolding. At just 23, Ponder’s journey was still in its early chapters.
The University of Colorado community, along with the wider college football world, is mourning a life lost far too soon. And for his family in Florida, this is a devastating and deeply personal loss that extends far beyond the game.
We will continue to follow updates from investigators and the university as more information becomes available. Stay with us for continuing coverage on this developing story and for more news from across the nation and around the world.
