Disgraced Celebrity Dentist Steven Lin Shot Dead After Violent Sydney Attack
A shocking and violent confrontation in one of Sydney’s most affluent neighborhoods has ended with a once high-profile dentist dead and two women seriously injured.
Police have identified the man shot by officers in Potts Point as Dr Steven Lin, a former celebrity dentist and author who had built a massive online following through his health advice and bestselling book, The Dental Diet. But behind that public image, authorities say, was a troubled figure facing serious criminal charges.
The incident unfolded inside an apartment complex on St Neot Avenue. Police allege Lin entered the secure building armed with a knife. Inside, two women who did not know him were attacked in separate areas of the complex. One woman was assaulted inside her own unit. Another was attacked in a shared laundry space. Both suffered serious injuries to the face and head and were rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital. One has already undergone surgery for a broken nose. Both are now reported to be in stable condition.
Witnesses described hearing desperate cries for help echoing through the hallway. When officers arrived, they were confronted by what they later called a very violent situation. Police say they deployed a Taser, but it failed to stop Lin. Officers then fired a single shot after he allegedly lunged at them with the knife. He died at the scene.

Dr Lin was 41 years old. He was once the founder of a successful dental clinic group and had more than 250,000 followers on social media. In recent years, however, his life had taken a darker turn. He was facing multiple domestic violence-related charges, including assault, breaching apprehended violence orders, stalking and choking offenses. He was due to face court later this month.
His family has told media outlets he struggled with methamphetamine use following a separation from his wife in 2024. Police have confirmed the two women attacked were not known to him.
A critical incident investigation is now underway, which is standard procedure in any fatal police shooting. Authorities say the officers involved are receiving support after what they described as a traumatic encounter.
This case raises difficult questions about mental health, substance abuse, domestic violence histories and how individuals with serious allegations against them can spiral into public violence. It also highlights the unpredictable dangers frontline officers face when responding to emergency calls.
As investigators piece together exactly what led to those terrifying ten minutes in Potts Point, the focus remains on the recovery of the victims and accountability on all fronts.
