Disney+ Unveils High-Stakes Korean Spy Drama With Lee Byung-hun
Disney+ is taking a bold leap into Korean storytelling with a high-budget remake of the acclaimed FX series The Americans, now reimagined as The Koreans. The series stars Lee Byung-hun and Han Ji-min as North Korean spies living undercover in South Korea during the early 1990s, a period marked by democratization and rapid cultural change. While they appear to be an ordinary middle-class family, both parents are secretly elite operatives working to destabilize the South from within.
This adaptation is notable not just for its star power but also for its ambitious storytelling. Disney is applying a distinctly Korean approach, using a consistent writer and director throughout the series, rather than the typical U.S. model of multiple guest directors and rotating writers. The goal is to capture a tightly woven narrative that balances espionage, family dynamics and the tension of ideological conflict. Director Ahn Gil-ho, known for hit thrillers like The Glory, is at the helm and Park Eun-kyo, acclaimed for Mother and Made in Korea, has adapted the original scripts for the local context.
The premise of the show resonates deeply with the Korean audience. By replacing Cold War-era American spies with North Korean operatives in South Korea, the series taps into historical and cultural realities unique to the region. Viewers can expect high-stakes drama as the couple navigates loyalty, love and identity, while a relentless Korean counterintelligence agent edges closer to uncovering their true nature.

Disney’s head of international local originals, Eric Schrier, explained that the project grew organically from Disney’s Korean content team rather than as a top-down mandate. The original The Americans creators and stars, Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys, have given their support, even if they won’t be directly involved. This endorsement underscores the respect for the original series while signaling a confidence in the new cultural reinterpretation.
The Koreans also represents a strategic push by Disney+ into the Asia-Pacific market. The streamer has ramped up local-language productions in South Korea, Japan and Australia, aiming to combine global appeal with strong local relevance. Alongside this series, Disney+ is developing several other Korean originals, including titles with major stars like IU, Suzy and Shin Mina, further positioning the platform as a significant player in Asian entertainment.
For viewers, this means a thrilling mix of espionage, family drama and cultural insight, delivered through one of Korea’s most recognized actors, Lee Byung-hun. The series will premiere exclusively on Disney+ internationally and on Hulu in the United States, promising to bring a new level of intensity and emotional depth to the spy genre.
Stay tuned as Disney+ continues to expand its Korean content slate, reshaping the way global audiences experience local stories and follow for updates on release dates and exclusive previews.
