Fatboy Slim Returns: Radio 1 Big Weekend Set to Shake Sunderland
Sunderland is gearing up for a music spectacle that promises to electrify the city like never before. BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend is returning to Herrington Country Park from May 22 to 24, bringing tens of thousands of music fans together for three days of live performances and the first day is shaping up to be a full-on dance party.
The opening day will be led by none other than Fatboy Slim, a true icon of the UK music scene. Known for anthems like "Praise You" and "Right Here, Right Now," he’s become a festival mainstay over decades of touring. Joining him is Australian DJ and producer Sonny Fodera, whose emotive house tracks have been making waves internationally. The Friday line-up also includes FISHER, Clementine Douglas and MK, promising a mix of pulsating beats, melodic house and electronic energy that will dominate the main stage.

But the dance floor excitement doesn’t stop there. Radio 1’s own DJs, including Arielle Free, Danny Howard, Charlie Hedges and Sarah Story, will bring the party to life across multiple stages. German DJ HorsegiirL, Scottish producer Ewan McVicar and bassline, trance and house DJs like Notion, Marlon Hoffstadt and L.P. Rhythm are also on the roster. A unique back-to-back set from Ahadadream and Arthi will further elevate the festival’s dynamic vibe. For the first time, Radio 1 is using all stages to create a sprawling, immersive dance experience on the opening day.
This year marks a return to Sunderland after a 21-year gap, with the last Big Weekend here in 2005 featuring major acts like Gwen Stefani and Foo Fighters. With around 100 acts across three days and a combination of general admission and VIP tickets available, the festival is expected to draw massive crowds from across the UK and beyond. Organizers have put ticket limits in place to ensure as many fans as possible get a chance to attend, reflecting the festival’s commitment to accessibility while maintaining a safe, enjoyable environment.
Radio 1’s Big Weekend has built a reputation for bringing high-profile artists to towns and cities that rarely host major live music events. Past editions have seen stars like Taylor Swift, Stormzy and Bruno Mars perform in locations from Norwich to Londonderry, transforming these cities into temporary music meccas and delivering unforgettable experiences for local communities.
As the countdown begins, anticipation is building for Sunderland to host one of the UK’s biggest live music parties of the year. For fans of electronic and dance music, this weekend promises unforgettable sets, iconic tracks and the chance to witness music history in the making.
