Female Tennis Stars Threatened with Guns Over Match Outcomes
Two professional women’s tennis players are speaking out after receiving shocking threats aimed not just at them, but at their families, raising urgent questions about safety and security in the sport. Hungarian player Panna Udvardy and Italian player Lucrezia Stefanini disclosed that anonymous individuals sent them messages demanding they lose their matches, accompanied by images of guns and personal details about their families.
Udvardy, ranked 95th in the world, described receiving multiple messages late at night on her private phone. The threats detailed where her family lives, the cars they drive and even included photos of relatives, warning of serious harm if she did not comply. She immediately contacted authorities and additional police officers were assigned to her match in Antalya, Turkey, while security was also deployed to her parents’ and grandmother’s homes. Despite the terrifying messages, Udvardy competed but ultimately lost her quarterfinal match.

Similarly, Stefanini, ranked 138th, revealed that she received threats ahead of a qualifying match at the Indian Wells Open. Her messages mirrored Udvardy’s, containing personal details and an image of a gun, creating intense fear and pressure before the match. She worked closely with tournament officials to enhance her security, yet she too was ultimately defeated in three hard-fought sets.
These incidents highlight a disturbing trend of targeted intimidation in professional tennis, underscoring the vulnerability of athletes off the court.
