Greg James Begins 1,000km Tandem Ride for Comic Relief as Town Turns Red in Support
A coastal town in southern England has turned red overnight, all to send one man on an extraordinary journey that will test endurance, emotion and community spirit across the United Kingdom.
BBC Radio 1 breakfast presenter Greg James is setting off on an eight-day cycling challenge that will take him roughly 1,000 kilometres, or about 630 miles, from the seaside town of Weymouth all the way to Edinburgh. The ride is part of a major fundraising effort for Comic Relief, one of Britain’s biggest charity campaigns, known globally for its Red Nose Day events supporting vulnerable communities.
The challenge begins along Weymouth’s famous seafront, where landmarks including the Jubilee Clock, the town bridge and surrounding waterfront lights have all been illuminated in red. Local officials, residents and supporters are expected to line the streets, cheering James on as he begins the long ride north.
But this is not just a symbolic send-off. The journey ahead is demanding. James will spend around eight hours a day on a tandem bicycle, pedaling across southern England, through Wales, the Midlands and eventually into northern England and Scotland. The ride will end in Edinburgh on Red Nose Day, marking the climax of what Radio 1 is calling “The Longest Ride.”

The bicycle itself carries a bit of humour, fitting for a Comic Relief event. The tandem has been nicknamed “Tando Norris,” a playful reference to Formula 1 star Lando Norris. And while James will ride much of the distance solo, the second seat will occasionally be filled by fellow Radio 1 presenters, special guests and even listeners who will join him along sections of the route.
What makes this challenge even more emotional is the personal context behind it. Just days before the ride, James revealed that his father suffered a stroke during heart surgery and remains in intensive care. Despite the family emergency, James has decided to continue with the challenge, saying his father has always been one of his biggest supporters and would want him to see it through.
Comic Relief challenges have long been known for pushing celebrities far beyond their comfort zones. Over the years, they have included mountain climbs, marathons and cross-country journeys, all designed to raise awareness and funding for people facing poverty, hardship and crisis around the world.
And that is the bigger picture here. A long bicycle ride might sound simple, but the goal is far larger than the distance itself. It is about turning attention into action and turning miles into millions for charity.
The road from Weymouth to Edinburgh will be long, unpredictable and physically exhausting. But if the red lights shining across this small seaside town are any indication, Greg James will not be riding alone.
