Health Insurance Hits Mortgage-Level Costs, Families Struggle to Cope
The cost of health insurance in the United States is hitting unprecedented levels, forcing families and individuals to make difficult financial decisions just to stay covered. For millions of Americans buying insurance through the Affordable Care Act marketplace, what was once manageable has now become a strain that rivals their mortgage payments.
Take the story of Ken Warner and Parveen Vohra, a self-employed couple in Connecticut. Last year, they were paying around $630 a month for health coverage, plus a modest amount for dental. This year, with federal subsidies for ACA plans expired, their premium skyrocketed to over $2,500 a month. That’s more than many families pay for housing and it’s a cost that’s forcing them to rethink nearly every aspect of their daily lives. They’ve canceled vacations, stopped streaming services and cut back on household help, all just to afford basic health coverage. Even tapping into retirement savings has become part of their reality.
They’re not alone. A follow-up survey from KFF finds that half of returning ACA Marketplace enrollees report their costs are “a lot higher” this year and more than 80% say premiums, deductibles, or out-of-pocket expenses have increased. Many people are now worried about affording routine medical visits or emergency care and a significant share have downgraded their plans or gone without coverage entirely. In fact, federal data shows over a million fewer people enrolled in ACA plans for 2026 compared to the previous year.
The financial pressure is broad and deep. Over half of enrollees report cutting back on groceries and basic household spending. Those with chronic health conditions are feeling the squeeze even more, with 62% saying they have to make tough trade-offs to cover health care costs. Younger adults are also leaving the Marketplace in large numbers, leaving an older, potentially higher-risk pool behind, which could push premiums even higher next year.

The political implications are equally significant. Nearly half of ACA enrollees say rising health costs will influence their vote in the upcoming midterms, with many citing the affordability of care as a deciding factor in which candidates they support. This underscores the tangible impact health policy has on everyday Americans’ lives, shaping not just personal budgets but broader political landscapes.
For families like Warner and Vohra, the future feels uncertain. With surgeries, ongoing medical needs and the looming costs of long-term care, high premiums are not just a temporary inconvenience—they’re a structural challenge that affects long-term financial security.
Stay with us as we continue to follow these developments, exploring how policy changes, federal subsidies and rising medical costs are reshaping the health care landscape across the country.
