New “Cicada” COVID Variant Spreads Fast—Is It a Real Threat?

A new COVID variant is quietly spreading across the United States and scientists say it’s unlike anything they’ve seen in recent months.

It’s being called “Cicada,” a nickname inspired by the insect that stays hidden for years before suddenly emerging. And much like that, this variant—officially known as BA.3.2—has been under the radar, evolving in the background and is now showing up in at least 25 states.

What’s catching the attention of health experts is not just its spread, but how different it looks at a genetic level. This variant carries a large number of mutations, especially in the spike protein, the part of the virus that helps it enter human cells. That matters because it’s also the main target of our immune defenses, whether from vaccines or past infections.

So the big question is, does this mean we’re facing a new wave?

Right now, the answer is cautious but reassuring. There’s no strong evidence that the “Cicada” variant is causing more severe illness. In fact, early data suggests symptoms remain similar to what people have experienced with recent strains—things like cough, fever, sore throat, fatigue and congestion. Most cases are still mild and manageable.

But there’s a catch.

Because of its mutations, this variant may be better at slipping past existing immunity. That means people who were previously infected, or even vaccinated, could still be at risk of catching it. However, experts stress that vaccines are still expected to protect against severe disease, which remains the most critical factor.

Globally, the variant has already been detected in over 20 countries and in parts of Europe, it’s responsible for a noticeable share of infections. Still, it hasn’t overtaken dominant strains and it hasn’t triggered a major surge anywhere—at least not yet.

And that uncertainty is exactly why health authorities are watching it closely.

The reality is, viruses evolve. That’s what they do. And while this one looks concerning on paper, it hasn’t proven itself to be more dangerous in real-world impact so far. But as always with COVID, things can change quickly.

For now, the message remains steady—stay aware of symptoms, test if needed and protect those at higher risk.

This story is still developing and scientists are learning more every day. Stay with us for the latest updates as we continue to track the spread and impact of the “Cicada” variant worldwide.
