Oscars’ Last Showdown: “One Battle After Another” Faces Surprise Rival
The 32nd Actor Awards are setting the stage for one of the most intense pre-Oscar showdowns we’ve seen in years. With just two weeks to go before the Academy Awards, all eyes are on “One Battle After Another” and Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners,” two films that couldn’t be more different, yet are now locked in a fierce competition for top honors.
This ceremony, formerly known as the Screen Actors Guild Awards, is now called the Actor Awards and remains one of the most predictive indicators for the Oscars. Why? Because actors themselves make up the largest voting block in the Academy and their choices often ripple directly into Oscar predictions. Kristen Bell is hosting this year’s event and it’s streaming live on Netflix, bringing Hollywood glamour directly into homes worldwide.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” enters as the heavy favorite. It’s already swept multiple major awards, including the Golden Globes, the BAFTAs and the Producers Guild Awards. The film leads the night with seven nominations, including the coveted best ensemble award. But its path isn’t entirely clear. If “Sinners” pulls off an upset, it could shake up the Oscar race and add an unexpected twist to Hollywood’s biggest night.
Individual performances are equally unpredictable. Timothée Chalamet, last year’s best actor winner for “A Complete Unknown,” is nominated again for “Marty Supreme.” Yet Robert Aramayo’s surprise win at the BAFTAs shows that nothing is guaranteed. Other nominees include Michael B. Jordan for “Sinners,” Leonardo DiCaprio for “One Battle After Another,” Ethan Hawke in “Blue Moon,” and Jesse Plemons in “Bugonia.” On the women’s side, Jessie Buckley leads the pack, with competition from Chase Infiniti, Rose Byrne, Kate Hudson and Emma Stone.
Supporting categories could be the real wild cards. “One Battle After Another” has multiple nominations, including Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro, while “Sinners” also has strong contenders like Wunmi Mosaku and Miles Caton. And this year, Hollywood legend Harrison Ford will receive the SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award, a moment sure to bring the room to its feet when Woody Harrelson presents it.
The Actor Awards aren’t just about recognition—they signal momentum, influence Oscar predictions and often reveal the shifting tastes of Hollywood’s most influential voters. For viewers, this ceremony is a window into the final pulse of awards season, where careers, films and legacies can pivot on a single night.
