Primark to Shut All UK Stores for 24 Hours — Shoppers Caught Off Guard
A major retail announcement in the United Kingdom is catching shoppers by surprise, as Primark confirms it will temporarily shut nearly all of its stores for a full day next month. For millions of customers who rely on the popular budget fashion chain, the sudden pause could mean empty shop floors and locked doors across much of the country.
Primark has announced that every one of its stores in England, Wales and Northern Ireland will close for 24 hours on Easter Sunday. That means roughly 190 locations across the UK will go dark for the day, interrupting the usual seven-day shopping routine that many customers have come to expect from the brand. The closures are not due to financial trouble or restructuring, but instead are tied to longstanding trading laws in the United Kingdom.
Under the Sunday Trading Act introduced in 1994, large retail stores must remain closed on Easter Sunday. The rule applies to shops that exceed a certain size and that includes most major supermarkets, department stores and clothing chains like Primark. Because of that regulation, the company is legally required to shut its doors for the day in most parts of the UK.

There is one exception. Stores in Scotland will remain open because the same restrictions do not apply there. So while shoppers south of the border may find closed storefronts, customers in Scotland will still be able to browse racks and check out as usual.
For many people, this may simply mean planning shopping trips around the Easter weekend. Stores are expected to operate normally on the days leading up to the holiday, though some branches may adjust their hours slightly. In most cases, shops will close late on Saturday night and reopen early Monday morning once the Easter Sunday restriction passes.
Still, the announcement matters because Primark plays a major role on Britain’s high streets. Known for its low prices and high foot traffic, the retailer attracts millions of shoppers every week. A nationwide closure, even for just one day, highlights how traditional trading laws can still shape modern retail in a country where online shopping and extended store hours have become the norm.
At the same time, the pause offers a rare moment of rest for thousands of employees working across Primark’s vast network of stores. And it also comes during a busy period for the company, which is continuing to expand with new locations, including a large new store opening soon in southern England.
