Quebec Hit by Massive Power Outage Affecting Over 300,000 Homes
Strong winds sweeping across Quebec have knocked out power for more than 300,000 homes, leaving communities from Montérégie to the Laurentides struggling to stay connected. Hydro-Québec has mobilized 1,500 workers and additional contractors, but officials warn that not all homes will be reconnected today. The storm, with gusts reaching up to 100 kilometers per hour, has uprooted trees and broken utility poles, causing widespread damage across the province.
Montérégie has been hit hardest, with more than 64,000 addresses without electricity, followed by Lanaudière, the Laurentides and the Capitale-Nationale. Hydro-Québec says restoration efforts are complicated by the very winds that caused the outages, making it unsafe for crews to reach certain areas immediately. Officials emphasize that the scale of this event is significant—nearly triple the number of homes affected during last week’s ice storm.

The storm system arrived late Monday and continues to move northeast, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures. In Montreal, daytime highs fell from nearly 14 degrees Celsius yesterday to a forecast low of minus 8 today, with wind chill pushing the feel closer to minus 16. Snowfall is also expected in some regions, adding another layer of challenge for emergency crews. Schools in affected areas, including Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean and Abitibi-Témiscamingue, have closed for the day, while commuter train services face delays due to fallen trees on the tracks.
Authorities stress that residents should stay cautious, secure any outdoor objects and avoid unnecessary travel, as road conditions may be difficult. Hydro-Québec is actively monitoring the situation and coordinating response efforts, but they acknowledge that full restoration could take several days for some locations. The provincial government is in close contact with the utility to manage the emergency and ensure public safety.
