Richmond's Rising Star Lalor Ready for Midfield Breakthrough

Sam Lalor has turned a career-halting hamstring setback into a springboard for what could be a breakout season in 2026. After missing significant time in his debut year and undergoing surgery last July, the 19-year-old Richmond midfielder is now fit, sharp and poised to take on a much larger role in the Tigers’ engine room.

Lalor’s 2025 season was a rollercoaster. He played 10 of the first 11 games before a recurring hamstring strain sidelined him, ultimately requiring surgery. Fast-forward to the end of the year and he returned to full training ahead of Christmas, completing a rigorous pre-season that Richmond coach Adem Yze describes as “ten times better” than last year. The difference is clear: Lalor is no longer a fill-in midfielder. He’s ready for consistent rotations at the heart of the team, able to contribute wherever the ball is and provide stability in Richmond’s forward and midfield structures.

This comes at a crucial time for the Tigers, who are integrating several young draftees into senior football. While Lalor has made the leap, others from the 2024 and 2025 drafts, like Josh Smillie and Sam Cumming, are still managing injuries. Smillie continues to recover from a quad setback, while Cumming is building shoulder strength before scheduled surgery. Yze has emphasized careful management, balancing player development with the long-term health and potential of his young roster.

Richmond exceeded expectations last year under Yze, improving from just two wins in 2024 to five victories in 2025, even amid retirements of key veterans like Dustin Martin and Dylan Grimes. The club’s strategy this season hinges on giving these young players meaningful exposure to AFL-level football, helping them build not just individual skills but also team cohesion. Lalor, who already shows an innate sense of belonging on the field, will be central to that effort.

The Tigers open their 2026 campaign against Carlton at the MCG and all eyes will be on whether Lalor can translate his pre-season form into match-day impact. A fully fit, confident Sam Lalor could be the difference-maker for Richmond, shaping not just their midfield rotations but potentially the trajectory of their season. His journey reflects the fine line between injury setbacks and emerging stardom in elite sport—a reminder that patience, management and opportunity often define careers as much as raw talent.
