Snow Before Sunrise Triggers 100+ School Delays Across Central Indiana
A fast-moving burst of snow overnight is forcing more than 100 schools across central Indiana to delay classes and it is creating a messy start to the week for thousands of families.
Cooler air has settled into the region to begin March and while Sunday stayed mostly dry, conditions changed quickly after midnight. A narrow band of wintry precipitation pushed north into the Indianapolis area, bringing a mix of rain and sleet at first, then changing over to light snow as temperatures dropped into the upper 20s.
The snow itself is not heavy by winter standards. Most areas are seeing anywhere from a trace to about one inch, with isolated pockets possibly reaching two inches. But timing is everything. This system arrived during the early morning hours, right before buses hit the roads and commuters began their drive to work. That is why slick spots have developed, especially south of Interstate 70 and why districts are choosing caution over risk.

Police have already reported multiple minor crashes on untreated roads. Bridges and overpasses are particularly slippery. Even a thin layer of snow can create dangerous black ice when temperatures hover near freezing. School officials say the delays are meant to give road crews time to treat surfaces and allow temperatures to rise enough for melting to begin.
By mid-morning, the snow is expected to taper off. Afternoon highs should reach near 40 degrees, which will help clear much of the accumulation. But this is only the beginning of a much more active pattern.
Forecasters are now tracking several storm systems lining up for the rest of the week. Warmer air and moisture will surge into the Midwest starting Tuesday and that means soaking rain is on the way. Some projections show three inches or more of rainfall over the next seven days. With frozen ground in some areas and rivers already running high, that raises concerns about localized flooding and elevated river levels.
So while today’s story is about light snow and school delays, the bigger picture is shifting quickly from winter nuisance to potential water issues later in the week.
