Texas Shocks BYU as March Madness Dreams End in First Round
Texas pulled off a stunning upset over BYU in the opening round of March Madness, leaving the Cougars’ season on an abrupt and disappointing end. The No. 11 seed Longhorns dominated the West Region clash, defeating sixth-seeded BYU 79-71 at the Moda Center in Portland. From the tip-off, Texas set the tone, building a nine-point lead by halftime and never relinquishing control in the second half.
Matas Vokietaitis led the charge for Texas with a commanding performance, posting 23 points and hauling in 16 rebounds while shooting efficiently from the floor. Four Longhorn players scored in double digits, demonstrating a balanced attack that proved too much for BYU’s defense to handle. The Cougars struggled to find help beyond AJ Dybantsa, who delivered a remarkable 35-point effort. Despite his scoring heroics and his status as one of the top prospects for this year’s NBA Draft, the lack of production from BYU’s bench left them with little chance to recover.

This loss is particularly tough for BYU, who entered the tournament on the back of a strong season. The Cougars were making their third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, their longest streak in more than a decade. AJ Dybantsa had an outstanding freshman campaign, averaging 25.3 points, 6.7 rebounds and nearly four assists per game, closing in on some of the highest single-season scoring records in program history. Alongside Robert Wright III, the duo has accumulated nearly 1,500 points this season, a feat that would place them among the elite scoring tandems in NCAA Division I history.
Texas, on the other hand, will advance to face the winner of the Gonzaga and Kennesaw State matchup. Their balanced roster and relentless execution make them a team to watch in the next round, capable of taking down higher-seeded opponents with composure and poise. For BYU, the first-round exit will be a bitter pill to swallow, but the foundation they’ve built this season, led by a generational talent in Dybantsa, points to a bright future.
March Madness is always a stage where legends are made and Thursday’s game was a reminder that one player’s brilliance can’t always carry an entire team. Texas executed their game plan perfectly and BYU will now regroup, with questions looming about how they can expand their supporting cast to avoid similar outcomes in future tournaments.
