Verstappen’s Scary Practice Moment Leaves Red Bull Racing Against Time
A frightening moment on the Formula One track has left Red Bull engineers scrambling, after world champion Max Verstappen pushed his car to the limit and paid the price during practice for the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.
The incident unfolded during the second practice session at Melbourne’s Albert Park circuit. Verstappen was building speed and searching for rhythm when his Red Bull suddenly ran wide at Turn 10. The car shot into the gravel trap at high speed and for a moment it looked like the situation could turn far worse. Fortunately, Verstappen managed to keep control and avoid a crash. But the damage had already been done.
As the car bounced through the gravel, pieces of carbon fiber were torn from the underside of the vehicle. Debris flew into the air behind him and the impact shredded parts of the car’s floor — one of the most critical aerodynamic components in modern Formula One.
Red Bull engineers later confirmed the damage was significant enough to keep the team busy in the garage. The good news for the reigning champions is that the situation is repairable. Team officials say the car took a hard hit, but nothing catastrophic. In Formula One terms, that means a long night of work rather than a weekend-ending disaster.

Despite the scare, Verstappen still managed to post the sixth fastest lap of the session. That result placed him more than half a second behind the day’s pace setter, local favorite Oscar Piastri in the McLaren. Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli also showed strong speed near the top of the timing sheets, highlighting how competitive the grid could be this season.
For Red Bull, this moment comes at a particularly sensitive time. The team has entered the 2026 season with a brand-new car and a completely new power unit developed in-house — a huge technical milestone for the organization. Early practice sessions are vital for gathering data and understanding how the machine behaves under race conditions.
Team engineers say the car showed encouraging balance earlier in the day, but small issues during the second session limited the number of clean laps they could run. Now the focus is clear. Repair the damage, analyze the data and make sure the car is ready to perform when it truly matters.
Because in Formula One, a single mistake in practice can quickly become a major problem by qualifying day.
