Airlines Crack Down on Power Banks: Ryanair Tightens Cabin Rules
Power banks, once seen as everyday travel essentials, are now at the center of a growing aviation safety crackdown that is changing how passengers pack for flights across Europe and beyond.
Airlines including Ryanair, easyJet and TUI are reinforcing strict rules on lithium battery devices, with some operators even moving toward outright bans in certain cases. The concern is not convenience, but safety at altitude. Aviation authorities warn that lithium batteries can enter a dangerous condition known as thermal runaway, where a device overheats uncontrollably, potentially leading to fire, explosion and toxic smoke inside an aircraft cabin.
Ryanair, one of Europe’s largest budget carriers, continues to allow passengers to carry power banks, but only under tight conditions. These devices must remain in hand luggage, never in checked baggage and they must be individually protected to prevent short circuits. That means insulation of terminals, original packaging, or protective pouches. The airline also limits battery capacity to 100 watt-hours for standard approval and passengers are warned that these devices cannot be used to charge electronics during critical phases of flight such as take-off and landing.

easyJet applies similar restrictions, requiring all lithium batteries and power banks to be kept in cabin bags only, with strict limits on capacity and quantity. TUI also enforces hand luggage-only storage, while stressing that devices must be fully switched off and protected from accidental activation.
Some international airlines have gone further, introducing outright bans or stricter onboard handling rules, reflecting rising global concern over battery-related incidents in aviation.
For passengers, this shift means travel habits are under review. The convenience of staying powered on the move is now balanced against strict safety protocols designed to protect everyone onboard. What was once a simple travel accessory is now a regulated item that must be handled with care and awareness.
