Woman’s Months of ‘Itching’ Reveal Hidden Cancer After Misdiagnoses

What began as relentless itching, fatigue and night sweats turned into a medical mystery that lasted nearly a year and ended with a diagnosis that changed one young woman’s life forever.

Sumbul Ari, a 26-year-old from Australia, spent 11 months battling severe itching, fatigue and night sweats. She says repeated visits to doctors brought little answers and her concerns were often dismissed or downplayed.

As the months went on, her condition worsened. She began scratching until she bled in her sleep, struggled with constant infections, lost her energy and appetite and developed a persistent cough that would not go away.

At different stages, she was told it could be dry skin, a yeast infection, scabies, or eczema. Basic tests came back mostly normal, except for borderline anaemia, leaving her without a clear explanation for her suffering.

Everything changed when she discovered a lump on her neck. After urgent scans, doctors found widespread swollen lymph nodes across her chest, neck and spleen. Further tests, including a biopsy and PET scan, confirmed Stage 2 to 3 Hodgkin lymphoma in March 2026.

She says her first reaction was relief at finally having answers, even alongside anger over the long delay. After starting chemotherapy, she noticed rapid improvement, with the intense itching stopping completely after her first treatment and her sleep finally returning.

Her case highlights how persistent symptoms should never be ignored, especially when they continue to worsen over time. Hodgkin lymphoma can often present with vague signs like fatigue, itching and night sweats, making early detection challenging but critical for better outcomes.

As awareness grows around these warning signs, medical experts continue to urge people to seek further opinions if symptoms persist without explanation.
