Body of US Soldier Found in Morocco Exercise, One Still Missing
A multinational military exercise in Morocco has taken a tragic turn, as search teams confirm the recovery of a missing US service member while another soldier remains unaccounted for. What began as a routine training operation has now shifted into a somber recovery mission stretching across land, sea and air.
The US Army has identified the recovered soldier as 27-year-old First Lieutenant Kendrick Lamont Key Jr, a platoon leader and air defence artillery officer from Richmond, Virginia. His body was discovered by Moroccan search personnel along the shoreline, in waters near Cap Draa, close to steep coastal cliffs where he and another soldier went missing on 2 May.
Both soldiers were taking part in African Lion 2026, one of the largest joint military drills involving the United States, NATO allies and African partner nations. The exercise brings together roughly 5,000 personnel from more than 40 countries, designed to strengthen coordination and operational readiness across diverse environments.

According to early accounts from military reporting, the incident unfolded during a sunset hike with a group of service members. One soldier reportedly fell into the ocean near the cliffs and others attempted a rescue in extremely difficult conditions. A human chain was formed using belts, but the effort failed as strong waves and dangerous currents complicated the situation. Additional soldiers entered the water in an attempt to help, but the conditions quickly overwhelmed the rescue effort.
The US Army has expressed deep sorrow over the loss. Officials described Key as a dedicated officer, emphasizing the emotional impact on his unit and fellow service members. Search operations are still ongoing for the second missing soldier, with US and Moroccan forces continuing coordinated efforts across the region.
This incident raises serious attention on the risks associated with training in rugged coastal terrain, even during controlled military exercises.
