India’s Weather Whiplash: Snow Returns to Himalayas as Heatwave Scorches Plains

A striking split across India is unfolding right now, where snow is falling in the Himalayas while the plains continue to burn under a relentless heatwave. This is not just seasonal change, it is what meteorologists are calling a dangerous weather whiplash.

Fresh snowfall has been reported in higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, including areas around Zoji La. White mountain passes are returning at a time when much of northern and central India is struggling with intense heat. Cities across Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh are recording extreme daytime temperatures, with nights offering little relief.

The India Meteorological Department says this contrast is being driven by multiple active weather systems moving in opposite directions. Western disturbances are bringing rain, thunderstorms and snow to the Himalayas, while dry hot air continues to dominate the plains. At the same time, moisture from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal is fueling heavy rainfall and storms in the northeast and parts of southern India.

This means India is effectively divided into three extreme zones. The north and central belt is trapped in a heatwave cycle. The Himalayan region is seeing snowfall, hail and gusty winds. And the northeast and south are experiencing intense pre-monsoon rainfall with thunderstorms and occasional hailstorms.

Officials warn that this volatile pattern is expected to continue over the coming days. Gusty winds, lightning and isolated hailstorms could impact hill regions, while heatwave conditions remain strong in many inland areas. In some places, temperatures are not dropping even at night, increasing health risks for vulnerable populations.

Meteorologists say this is a classic sign of a turbulent seasonal transition before the southwest monsoon fully advances. But what makes this phase concerning is the intensity and overlap of systems, creating sudden shifts that can strain infrastructure, agriculture and daily life.

For millions, this is a reality of extremes happening at the same time, snow on one side and scorching heat on the other.

We will continue to track these rapidly changing conditions. Stay tuned and stay informed as we bring you the latest updates from across the country, around the clock.
