Jodie Whittaker Joins Explosive England Football Drama as BBC Drops First Trailer
The pressure, the heartbreak and the obsession surrounding England’s national football team are now heading to television in a major new BBC drama and one of the biggest talking points is the arrival of Jodie Whittaker in a pivotal role.
The BBC has officially released the first trailer for Dear England, a four-part drama based on the award-winning stage play that captured the emotional rollercoaster of England’s modern football era under manager Gareth Southgate. And from the first images released, this is not just another sports drama. It is being presented as a story about pressure, national identity, failure and redemption.
At the center of the series is Joseph Fiennes playing Gareth Southgate, the manager who inherited an England team haunted by decades of disappointment, especially in penalty shootouts and major tournament collapses. The trailer shows a tense atmosphere around the squad, with criticism from the media, doubt from supporters and enormous expectations hanging over every decision.
But one of the most important characters in the story is the role played by Jodie Whittaker. She portrays sports psychologist Pippa Grange, the real-life figure credited with helping transform the mentality inside the England camp. That psychological shift became one of the defining themes of Southgate’s era, as England moved away from fear and pressure and toward belief and unity.

The original stage play by playwright James Graham became a major cultural success in the UK, winning top theatre awards and drawing praise for turning football into something much bigger than sport. It explored why England’s national team carries such emotional weight for millions of fans and why repeated failures affected the country so deeply.
Now, the television adaptation is aiming for an even wider audience. The cast includes actors portraying stars like Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish, recreating some of the most emotionally charged moments from England’s recent tournaments.
This matters because football dramas rarely focus on the psychological side of elite sport. Dear England appears to dig into leadership, media pressure, mental resilience and the burden placed on young athletes performing in front of an entire nation.
The series will begin streaming on BBC iPlayer on May 24, before airing on BBC One and expectations are already building after the trailer sparked major discussion online among football fans and television audiences alike.
