Montreal One Win Away From Glory After Dramatic Overtime Thriller
The pressure is now fully on Ottawa, because Montreal is just one victory away from making history in the Professional Women’s Hockey League. In front of a packed crowd at Place Bell, La Victoire de Montréal delivered another dramatic playoff performance, defeating the Ottawa Charge 2-1 in overtime and taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the Walter Cup Final series.
And once again, this game had everything hockey fans could ask for. Speed, physical battles, missed chances, huge saves and an overtime finish that sent the arena into chaos.
Ottawa struck first against the run of play. Sarah Wozniewicz capitalized on a rebound in the opening period, giving the Charge an early lead despite Montreal controlling possession and outshooting their opponents. That goal immediately changed the tone of the game, because suddenly Montreal had to chase the scoreboard again.
But this Montreal team has shown throughout the playoffs that it refuses to panic. Early in the second period, defender Kati Tabin tied the game with a determined individual effort, weaving through defenders and finishing with confidence. From that point forward, Montreal kept pushing, creating wave after wave of pressure in front of Ottawa goaltender Gwyneth Philips.

Still, the Charge would not break easily. Philips delivered one clutch save after another and Ottawa continued to threaten on counterattacks. Both teams traded opportunities in a tense third period, but neither side could find the winner in regulation.
Then came overtime, where the intensity rose even higher.
For several minutes, it looked like either team could end it. Montreal goalie Ann-Renée Desbiens made two massive saves to keep her team alive and moments later the puck found Maggie Flaherty in open space. She fired a clean shot past Philips, ending the game instantly and bringing the crowd to its feet.
Now Montreal heads to Ottawa with a chance to capture the Walter Cup for the first time in franchise history. And this matters far beyond one championship series. The rapid growth of the PWHL has become one of the biggest stories in global women’s sports. Packed arenas, rising television audiences and intense playoff atmospheres are proving that women’s hockey is entering a completely new era.
For Montreal, this is about more than winning a trophy. It is about establishing a legacy in a league that is still writing its first chapters. For Ottawa, the challenge is now survival. Another loss and the season is over.
The next game could become a defining moment for professional women’s hockey in Canada. Stay with us for continuing coverage and every major development as the Walter Cup Final moves closer to its dramatic conclusion.
