Russell Stuns Montreal as Mercedes Dominates Sprint Qualifying

The fight for control in Formula One has taken a dramatic turn in Montreal and George Russell has just delivered one of the biggest statements of the 2026 season. Under the lights at the Canadian Grand Prix Sprint Qualifying, the Mercedes driver stormed to pole position and reminded the paddock that this championship battle is far from settled.

Russell came into Canada under pressure. His teammate, young sensation Kimi Antonelli, has already won three races this season and arrived in Montreal with growing momentum. But when the pressure peaked, it was Russell who responded like a veteran contender. He produced a blistering lap in the final moments of Sprint Qualifying, edging Antonelli by less than a tenth of a second and locking out the front row for Mercedes.

And that result matters far beyond one qualifying session.

Mercedes has clearly found something with its latest upgrades. For the first time this season, the team looked genuinely comfortable, fast over one lap, stable through the corners and confident over the bumps that make the Montreal circuit so demanding. Russell described the car as finally feeling like a “proper Formula One car,” and on track, that confidence was obvious.

But the story in Canada is not just about Mercedes rising. It is also about the shifting balance at the top of Formula One.

McLaren, which has been one of the strongest teams this year, could only manage third and fourth with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Ferrari showed flashes of speed, especially with Lewis Hamilton, who looked far more competitive after making major setup changes for the weekend. Hamilton’s fifth place may not sound headline-grabbing, but inside Ferrari, it could be an important breakthrough.

Then there is Red Bull and the concerns are getting louder.

Max Verstappen struggled throughout the session with a car that appeared unstable and difficult to control over Montreal’s rough surface. The reigning champion could only qualify seventh and his frustration over the radio reflected a team still searching for answers. For a squad used to dominating weekends, this was another warning sign.

The session itself was chaotic from the beginning. Fernando Alonso crashed into the barriers, bringing out red flags and creating a frantic rush in the closing moments of SQ1. Several drivers failed to even start their final laps in time. Alex Albon was unable to participate after striking a groundhog during practice, while Liam Lawson missed the session entirely because of technical problems.

So now, all eyes turn to the Sprint race. Mercedes has the front-row lockout, Antonelli is chasing another statement win and Russell suddenly looks re-energized in this title fight.

And if this qualifying session is any indication, the battle for the 2026 Formula One championship may be entering a completely new phase. Stay with us for continuing coverage and every major development from Montreal and across the Formula One season.
