Sabalenka Storms Into French Open Second Round With Commanding Paris Performance
World number one Aryna Sabalenka has sent an early warning to the rest of the field at the French Open, powering into the second round with a dominant straight-sets victory in Paris. The Belarusian star defeated Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-4, 6-2 on Court Philippe-Chatrier, showcasing the aggressive form that has made her one of the tournament favorites.
From the opening game, Sabalenka looked completely in control. She raced out to a commanding 4-0 lead in the first set, overwhelming Bouzas Maneiro with fierce groundstrokes and relentless pressure from the baseline. But just when it seemed the set would disappear quickly, a brief dip in concentration allowed the Spaniard to fight her way back into the contest.
Unforced errors began creeping into Sabalenka’s game and Bouzas Maneiro took advantage, clawing back two breaks and threatening to level the set at 5-5. However, at the crucial moment, a double fault from the Spaniard handed the momentum straight back to the world number one, who closed out the opener with authority.

The second set followed a similar pattern of dominance. Sabalenka once again surged ahead, this time opening up a massive 5-0 lead as her power and court coverage proved too much to handle in the warm Paris conditions. Bouzas Maneiro managed to extend the contest briefly by holding serve and earning a late break, but another costly double fault ultimately sealed the match in Sabalenka’s favor after just 75 minutes on court.
Speaking after the victory, Sabalenka highlighted the growing confidence she now has in all areas of her game, especially her willingness to attack at the net.
She said one of the most enjoyable aspects of her evolution as a player is being able to move forward and finish points aggressively at the net — an area she feels has improved significantly over the past year.
The performance will only strengthen belief that Sabalenka could go one step further this year after finishing runner-up in Paris last season. Her explosive style, combined with improved variety and composure, makes her one of the most dangerous players remaining in the draw.
Sabalenka will now face the winner of the match between Czech qualifier Linda Fruhvirtova and French hopeful Elsa Jacquemot as she continues her pursuit of a maiden French Open crown.
