The ECB confirmed Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were present at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning when the incident occurred. Saracens rugby club is also investigating after an academy player connected to their club was involved. Neither the ECB nor Saracens have released the identity of the academy player. The investigation is seeking further information and an announcement regarding the squad for the second Test will be made in due course.
The England captain himself was heard saying after the match that he "won't be really happy until I get to share a beer with the boys," a statement that now carries significant weight. Director of Cricket Rob Key had previously denied a drinking culture within the team, but this incident casts a shadow over those assurances.
