J-Los Office Romance: A Flop or a Hit?
Jennifer Lopez is back in the romantic comedy genre and her latest Netflix film, "Office Romance," has just dropped on the platform. This isn't just any rom-com; it's being touted as a return to the style of her early 2000s hits like "Maid in Manhattan" and "The Wedding Planner." However, early reviews suggest that while J-Lo herself is as charming as ever, the film might be missing some of that signature spark. The movie also features Brett Goldstein, known for his role in "Ted Lasso," who co-wrote the script and stars opposite Lopez.
"Office Romance" sees Jennifer Lopez playing Jackie, the CEO of an airline she inherited. Despite facing accusations of being a "nepo baby," she's dedicated to her job, often at the expense of her personal life. The plot thickens when a lawsuit arises, alleging she used her body to secure business deals, a claim made harder to believe because she's shown to have no romantic or sexual entanglements. Things get complicated when the company's top lawyer chokes on a breakfast burrito, forcing Jackie to rely on his underling, Daniel, played by Brett Goldstein, to represent her.

Daniel, an American lawyer struggling to adapt to the corporate environment, finds himself falling for Jackie, despite a strict company policy forbidding employee relationships. The film reportedly includes a scene where Daniel experiences a rather public and awkward physical reaction upon meeting Jackie, which critics have found more uncomfortable than humorous or "saucy." Despite Jackie's tough reputation, she surprisingly doesn't fire Daniel and a behind-closed-doors relationship begins, quickly escalating from physical intimacy to something more serious.
The chemistry between Lopez and Goldstein is a key talking point in the reviews. While Lopez is praised for her enduring star power and comfort in the genre, Goldstein's performance and the script he co-wrote with Joe Kelly are seen as lacking. Critics note attempts to inject British humor, like awkwardness and affectionate insults, into the American setting, but feel it doesn't quite blend smoothly. Some reviewers also pointed out the film's R rating and promise of "raunch" felt somewhat unearned, with much of the naughtiness boiling down to double entendres and implied sex.
Despite the mixed reviews, the film is expected to be a streaming success for Netflix, given J-Lo's proven track record on the platform with previous releases like "The Mother" and "Atlas." The supporting cast also gets a nod, with Betty Gilpin singled out for her performance as a sarcastic yet supportive colleague, delivering what some consider the film's only genuinely funny moments. She’s recognized for making the most of a role that could have been thankless and many hope to see her in a leading romantic role soon.
The film premiered in London with Lopez dazzling in a stunning Richard Quinn gown, continuing her trend of dramatic and romantic fashion choices throughout her promotional tour. She also wore a floral gown by Miss Sohee to the New York premiere and a vintage Atelier Versace gown in Los Angeles. "Office Romance" is available to stream on Netflix starting June 5th and it’s definitely a film that fans of Jennifer Lopez will likely flock to, even if critics are divided on its overall success.
