Monaco GP: Hamiltons Bold Start Gamble
The iconic streets of Monaco are buzzing with anticipation for the Grand Prix this Sunday and it's shaping up to be a real spectacle. Pole position has been claimed by the young sensation Kimi Antonelli, with Max Verstappen right behind him and Lewis Hamilton starting from a promising third place for Ferrari. In Monaco, qualifying is often more crucial than the race itself, as overtaking on the narrow street circuit is notoriously difficult. This means the start and crucially the run down to Turn 1, could be absolutely decisive in determining who takes the chequered flag.
This season, however, has brought new regulations that have led to much more varied and unpredictable race starts compared to recent years. While Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton's team, have shown consistently strong getaways, Antonelli himself has experienced some struggles off the line, which has been a rare blemish on his otherwise dominant championship lead. Max Verstappen has also had his share of tricky starts in his Red Bull. This variance gives Hamilton a glimmer of hope and he's openly stated that he'll need "the best start we've ever had" to have a genuine chance of challenging the leaders.

Hamilton himself acknowledged the immense challenge ahead, telling Sky Sports F1 that beating Antonelli and Verstappen will be incredibly tough, as they are both "great drivers who are in quick cars and have been very quick all weekend." Despite the odds, he's determined to give it everything, aiming to "hassle them as much as I can and try and force them into not making certain corners." The short run to Turn 1 in Monaco means any advantage gained at the start could be crucial and Hamilton is clearly banking on a lightning-fast getaway to shake things up.
Kimi Antonelli, who has a commanding 43-point lead in the championship, is also keenly aware of the importance of the start. Having overcome issues with losing positions off the line earlier in the season, he's optimistic but cautious. Antonelli mentioned that while his starts have improved, he doesn't plan on attempting a "magic start," simply aiming for a clean getaway and then assessing the situation from there. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff echoed this sentiment, advising Antonelli to make his car "wide like a tourist bus" to defend his lead into the first corner.
Max Verstappen, usually a master of the start, has also faced some uncharacteristic challenges this year and admits he'll need "a bit of luck" to get past Antonelli. Despite qualifying second, he's pleased with his car's competitiveness, especially after Ferrari had looked so strong in practice. Former champion Jenson Button is predicting fireworks at the start, noting that with neither of the front two having perfect starts this season and Hamilton right behind them, there's definitely potential for "some action" in those crucial opening moments.
The Monaco Grand Prix is scheduled to get underway at 2pm UK time on Sunday, with build-up coverage starting at 12:30pm on Sky Sports F1. With the unique challenges of the Monaco circuit and the recent unpredictability of the car starts, this race promises to be an edge-of-your-seat thriller right from the drop of the green light. All eyes will be on that critical run to Turn 1, where Lewis Hamilton is hoping his "best ever start" can make the difference. Stay with Mirror 7 News for all updates as they happen.
