Well hello everyone and welcome back to Mirror 7 News. We're bringing you the latest from the baseball diamond tonight and it was a tough outing for the Toronto Blue Jays as they kicked off a new series against the Baltimore Orioles. The Jays welcomed Baltimore to the Rogers Centre on Friday, June 5th, 2026, hoping to gain some ground in the standings. Unfortunately for the home crowd, the Orioles came out swinging and delivered a decisive blow right from the start, leaving Toronto with a lot to think about.

The star of the show, without a doubt, was Baltimore's Adley Rutschman. He had an absolutely incredible night at the plate, driving in a staggering five runs for his team. Rutschman wasn't just getting singles either; he blasted a home run and added a pair of two-run doubles, showcasing his power and clutch hitting. This offensive explosion from Rutschman really set the tone for the entire game and put the Blue Jays in a deep hole early on. It was a performance that will be talked about for a while.

Baltimore's offense didn't stop with Rutschman, though. In the pivotal sixth inning, which saw the Orioles score five runs, Coby Mayo joined the power surge with a two-run homer of his own. This offensive outburst helped the Orioles, who are now 31-33 on the season, secure their fifth win in their last six games. On the flip side, the Blue Jays, now sitting at 30-34, have lost five of their last six, a trend they'll desperately want to reverse.

The Orioles' starting pitcher, Brandon Young, picked up the win, improving his record to 4-1. He pitched effectively for 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs and striking out four batters without issuing a walk. While the Blue Jays did manage to get on the board, including a two-run homer from catcher Brandon Valenzuela in the fifth, they couldn't contain Baltimore's relentless attack. Toronto's starter, Trey Yesavage, took the loss, giving up six earned runs over 5 2/3 innings.

There were a couple of other notable storylines from the game. Toronto outfielder Daulton Varsho had to leave the game in the fourth inning due to left wrist discomfort, which is certainly a concern for the team. On the positive side for the Blue Jays, starting pitcher Dylan Cease is expected to rejoin the rotation early next week after a successful rehab assignment. Meanwhile, former Blue Jay Chris Bassitt was honored with a video tribute before the game and he's expected to make his next start for the Orioles against the Seattle Mariners.

Looking ahead, the Blue Jays will be aiming to bounce back in the second game of this three-game series on Saturday. They're expected to utilize a bullpen game, with Spencer Miles likely taking on the bulk of the innings. The Orioles are set to counter with right-hander Kyle Bradish on the mound. It's clear the Blue Jays have a significant challenge ahead of them to turn this series around after such a tough opening loss. Stay with Mirror 7 News for all updates as they happen.
