Summer Fest Attendees Say It Was Like a Final Destination Scene

Thousands of people attended Summer Fest at the Beach this past weekend, but many are now describing the experience as unsafe, likening it to a scene from the movie Final Destination, particularly due to severe weather conditions. Revellers reported claims of being refused entry, manhandled by security and held against their will. The festival organizers have denied some of these allegations, stating public safety was their priority throughout the event.

This first-time festival in Weston-super-Mare featured a lineup including Craig David, Sister Sledge and Dizzee Rascal, but faced significant challenges. Rock band The Feeling, who were scheduled to perform, had to withdraw and this change was not immediately updated on the event's website, leading to further confusion and disappointment for festival-goers. The organizers acknowledged they would use feedback to shape future events.

On Saturday, one attendee, Emma Cox from Oxfordshire, described the VIP tent as unstable due to strong winds, with people holding up metal poles to steady it. She stated, "We just did not feel safe in there at all," and recalled the tent being declared unsafe by security about thirty minutes later. Hundreds were then moved to an outdoor area where facilities like toilets and bars were shut down and attendees were told they could not leave, feeling "imprisoned into a tiny pen." Organizers confirmed some VIP facilities were temporarily closed as a precautionary safety measure.

Another festival-goer, Lina Praspeliauskiene, was turned away at the entrance by security and told the show was cancelled, with assurances of a refund for her two tickets costing two hundred and eighty pounds. However, upon returning home, she discovered the event had not been called off. The festival spokesperson confirmed that security staff were not authorized to close gates, announce cancellations, or promise refunds and stated they are addressing the actions of one individual on the security team.

Despite these serious concerns, the festival organizers expressed pride in bringing a major live music event to Weston-super-Mare, estimating that about thirty-five thousand people attended over the weekend. They claimed the overwhelming majority of attendees had a fantastic time and that feedback received was "incredibly positive." The event aimed to evoke nostalgia for T4 on the Beach, which previously drew large crowds to the area.

While the festival faced criticism regarding safety and communication, organizers are committed to learning from any issues and making improvements for future years. They believe the event was a significant undertaking and a success in bringing entertainment back to the town. Stay with Mirror 7 News for all updates as they happen.
