Summer Game Fest 2025: Hits and Misses Revealed
As we gear up for another exciting Summer Game Fest presentation, it's always interesting to look back and see how the big promises from the previous year have actually panned out. Last year’s showcase in 2025 was packed with reveals, from massive AAA titles to smaller indie gems and the outcomes have been quite varied. Some games have become huge successes, while others have unfortunately faded into obscurity or faced significant challenges. Let's dive into some of the biggest announcements from Summer Game Fest 2025 and see where those titles stand today.
One of the standout successes from the 2025 event was undoubtedly *Resident Evil Requiem*. Capcom has been on an incredible run with its major releases, building on the enduring popularity of the *Monster Hunter* series and a string of critically acclaimed *Resident Evil* games. This consistent success has clearly given them the financial freedom to take creative risks with titles like *Pragmata* and *Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess*. *Resident Evil Requiem* continued this trend, proving to be a massive hit and a testament to the studio's strong momentum in the AAA space.
On the other end of the spectrum, *Last Flag* emerged as a cautionary tale, a common occurrence in the live-service shooter genre. Developed by Night Street Games, a studio co-founded by Imagine Dragons singer Dan Reynolds, this 5v5 hero shooter felt like a passion project that arrived perhaps too late to the party. The market has become saturated with live-service titles and *Last Flag* found itself battling against player fatigue. Sadly, just a few weeks after its launch, the development team announced they would be winding down future support, a swift end for what was clearly a labour of love.
However, not all hope was lost in the realm of big franchises, as *007 First Light* delivered a spectacular return for the iconic spy. Developed by IO Interactive, known for their *Hitman* series, this James Bond game has been hailed as the best in the franchise since *GoldenEye* on the N64. It’s been flying off the shelves since its release, a huge commercial success for the studio. While there were initial concerns about the intellectual property’s future with Amazon’s acquisition, IO Interactive has released a statement reassuring fans that more Bond adventures are likely, much to the delight of gamers worldwide.

The extraction shooter genre proved its resilience with *Arc Raiders*. Despite general gamer fatigue surrounding live-service multiplayer games, the unique appeal of extraction shooters continues to draw players in, much like other titles in the genre. *Arc Raiders* launched in late 2025 with significant hype that has largely persisted, even amidst some controversial comments regarding generative AI usage from its publisher, Nexon. This continued engagement suggests the game has found a solid footing within its niche.
The indie scene also offered some memorable moments, like *Mixtape*. This game generated considerable discussion within the gaming community, far exceeding what its modest scope might have suggested. While many enjoyed its slice-of-life teenage adventure narrative, set to a fantastic soundtrack, others felt it leaned too heavily into nostalgia and presented a limited view of the adolescent experience. These differing opinions sparked lively debates on social media for weeks, highlighting the game's impact on gaming discourse.
*Mina the Hollower*, from Yacht Club Games, has emerged as a significant indie hit this summer. Originally slated for an October 2025 release, a delay pushed it into June of this year and that extra development time appears to have paid off handsomely. The game has already sold over 300,000 copies in its first three days, a monumental achievement that the developers say will ensure the studio's future without needing external investment or resorting to layoffs. It’s a truly inspiring success story for an independent developer.
Unfortunately, not every game found its audience, with *MindsEye* being one of the notable disappointments. Led by a team including a former *GTA* producer, the game ultimately failed to live up to its considerable pre-release hype. Reports suggest a turbulent development cycle, with former employees filing grievances over alleged monitoring software and crunch conditions. The studio's executives, however, have painted a different picture, claiming sabotage, though the evidence presented in a subsequent special mission failed to convince many.
Finally, *Splitgate 2* faced its own set of challenges. The CEO's MAGA-adjacent hat at the 2025 presentation overshadowed any game discussion and post-launch, the game struggled with player retention and complaints about microtransactions and its battle royale mode. In response, the developers took the game back into beta, eventually relaunching it in December under a new name, *Splitgate: Arena Reloaded*, in an attempt to revitalise the experience.
