WWDC 2026: Siri Gets a Major AI Overhaul
Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, or WWDC, is always a big event, but this year, it feels like it's going to be truly transformative, especially for a personal assistant many of us use every day. We're talking about Siri and the whispers coming out of Apple suggest a massive upgrade is on the horizon for iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27. This isn't just a minor tweak; it's a complete reimagining of what Siri can do, aiming to put Apple right back in the race against major AI players like Google and OpenAI. Get ready for a Siri that understands you, your devices and the world around you in ways we haven't seen before.
The core of this massive update revolves around artificial intelligence and it's set to bring Siri into a new era. For years, Siri has felt a bit... limited. But now, imagine an assistant that can genuinely understand context, drawing on your emails, messages, files and even what's on your screen to help you out. This means asking things like "Show me the files Eric sent me last week" or "Find the email where Eric mentioned ice skating" will become second nature. Apple is also aiming for Siri to have "on-screen awareness," so if you're looking at an address in a message, you can simply ask Siri to add it to your contacts. It's about making Siri a much more proactive and intelligent helper.
This evolution means Siri will be deeply integrated across Apple's apps, from Photos to Messages and even into third-party applications. Developers will be able to expose their app's capabilities, allowing Siri to perform actions that are currently impossible, like moving files between apps or editing a photo before sharing it. We're also seeing the emergence of a dedicated Siri app, positioning it more like a chatbot similar to ChatGPT or Claude. This new Siri will be able to search the web, generate images, summarise information and write emails, all while crucially leveraging your personal data with a strong emphasis on privacy.
Also Read:Apple is clearly leaning into privacy as a key differentiator, promising to keep as much processing on-device as possible. They're calling this "Apple Intelligence," and it will run on your devices and through secure cloud compute. Users will have control over how long their data is retained, with options to auto-delete chats after a set period or keep them permanently, syncing across your iCloud account. Importantly, for those who prefer not to dive into these new AI features, Apple is ensuring that users can opt out, keeping Siri and Apple Intelligence completely optional.
Beyond Siri, iOS 27 is bringing some exciting enhancements to core apps. The Camera app is getting a significant overhaul, with "Visual Intelligence" becoming more prominent, allowing Siri to identify objects and provide information directly. The Photos app is gaining powerful AI editing tools like "Extend" and "Reframe," letting you expand images or change perspective after they're taken. Even the Shortcuts app is getting smarter, allowing users to create complex automations simply by describing what they want Siri to do.
There's also a lot coming to the Wallet app, including the ability to create digital passes from physical items like tickets or membership cards and a handy AI-powered bill-splitting feature for Apple Cash. Image Playground and Genmoji are getting updates for better image generation and more efficient emoji creation, while Writing Tools will offer advanced rewriting and grammar checking powered by AI. Even smaller updates, like a revamped Safari start page and new grid and level options in the Camera app, show a commitment to refining the user experience across the board.
One of the most intriguing aspects is the potential integration of rival chatbots like Claude and Gemini directly into Siri through "Extensions." This means users could choose their preferred AI service to handle specific requests, moving beyond just ChatGPT. Apple is also reportedly using Google's Gemini AI models as a backbone for its own AI efforts, signalling a significant partnership. With all these advancements, from a smarter Siri to enhanced app functionalities, iOS 27 is shaping up to be a major leap forward for Apple devices, especially with the rumoured introduction of a foldable iPhone that will require entirely new interface designs.
