Aggies Struggle as Notre Dame Prevails 23-13 in Season Opener
Hello everyone, and welcome to our post-game analysis. The 2024 college football season kicked off with high hopes and expectations as Texas A&M took on Notre Dame under the bright lights of Kyle Field. However, the Aggies’ much-anticipated debut under new head coach Mike Elko fell short, as they were defeated 23-13 by the Fighting Irish. This matchup revealed several key areas of concern for A&M as they look to find their footing in this new era.
The game was marked by a frustratingly familiar issue for the Aggies: offensive inconsistency. Conner Weigman, who entered the season with high expectations, struggled throughout the contest. His performance was notably underwhelming, especially in the first half where he completed just 7 of 17 passes and threw two critical interceptions. The first pick came on an overthrow intended for Noah Thomas, while the second was a poorly timed throw behind Theo Melin Ohrstom. Weigman's accuracy issues continued into the second half, and despite a few moments of hope, he finished the game with a lackluster 12 completions on 31 attempts for only 100 yards and no touchdowns.

While Weigman’s struggles were significant, they were compounded by a receiving corps that had difficulty creating separation. The offensive line, however, showed signs of improvement compared to previous seasons. They managed to protect the quarterback better than in recent years, although they still allowed one sack. The rushing game was inconsistent, with the Aggies finishing with 124 yards and one touchdown. Le’Veon Moss had some promising moments but the run game will need to be more reliable if Texas A&M hopes to find success this season.
On the defensive side, the Aggies had a respectable showing overall but with some notable concerns. There were several instances where edge defenders lost containment, which proved costly. Notre Dame exploited these lapses, especially during the game-winning drive when they dominated the line of scrimmage, ultimately rushing for 198 yards. This, combined with the fatigue from a stagnant A&M offense, created a challenging situation for the defense.
One bright spot in an otherwise tough game was the performance of punter Tyler White. He had two impressive punts, one for 61 yards and another for 62 yards, which helped flip the field and provided some much-needed relief for the defense. White’s strong performance in a defensive battle was a rare positive in a game that otherwise left much to be desired.
Looking ahead, it’s clear that significant improvements are needed for the Aggies, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. With the SEC schedule looming, finding a solution at quarterback and enhancing the offensive strategy will be crucial. Offensive Coordinator Collin Klein will have his work cut out for him as he looks to address these issues and improve the team’s overall performance.
Despite the frustrating loss, there’s still a lot of football left in the season. The Aggies will need to regroup and refine their game plan as they prepare to face upcoming opponents. It’s a challenging start to the season, but with adjustments and improvements, there’s hope that the team can turn things around and make a strong push as the season progresses.
