Chelsea Triumphs Over Servette in UEFA Conference League Qualifier
Chelsea Football Club has made a significant stride towards the group stages of the UEFA Conference League with a 2-0 victory over Servette FC at Stamford Bridge. This result marks Enzo Maresca’s first win as Chelsea's head coach, setting a positive tone for his tenure.
The match, held on August 22, 2024, saw Chelsea’s attacking prowess come to the fore in the second half. The opening goal came from Christopher Nkunku, who converted a penalty in the 50th minute. The penalty was awarded after Nkunku was fouled by Servette’s goalkeeper, Jeremy Frick. The French forward, who has been a standout for Chelsea, made no mistake from the spot, sending the ball into the bottom left corner despite Frick's best efforts to stop it.
Following Nkunku’s goal, Chelsea continued to press, and their efforts were rewarded with a second goal in the 76th minute. Noni Madueke, a substitute, scored a brilliant goal after a precise through ball from fellow substitute Enzo Fernandez. Madueke’s powerful shot from a tight angle ensured a comfortable lead for the Blues.

Despite Chelsea’s dominance, the first half was less convincing. The home side struggled to break down Servette’s defense, and their only notable first-half chances were thwarted. Mykhailo Mudryk’s shot went wide, and Pedro Neto’s attempt was saved by Frick. Servette had a few chances of their own, including a header that missed the target and several corners, but they couldn’t capitalize on their opportunities.
Chelsea's defense and goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen, making his debut, had to remain alert as Servette pushed for an equalizer. Jorgensen made a couple of crucial saves and had to deal with a powerful effort from Servette’s Tiemoko Ouattara that hit the crossbar late in the game. The Blues’ backline, though tested, managed to hold firm and preserve a clean sheet.
Enzo Maresca expressed relief and satisfaction after the match, acknowledging the need for improvement despite the win. He noted that while the team’s game management showed promise, there were areas for enhancement, particularly in maintaining possession and tightening up defensively. The coach also mentioned that the match had been a valuable learning experience for the team, which had made nine changes from their previous league game.
Chelsea’s performance, though marked by some missed opportunities and occasional lapses, sets them up favorably for the return leg in Geneva. With a two-goal advantage, they are well-positioned to advance to the next stage of the competition. The second leg promises to be a test of Chelsea's ability to build on their current form and secure their place in the group stages.
In summary, Chelsea's victory over Servette highlighted the team's potential under new management, with standout performances from Nkunku and Madueke. As the team prepares for the second leg, the focus will be on refining their play and ensuring they maintain their momentum in both domestic and European competitions.
