The Dallas Cowboys are shaking things up in their offensive backfield with a major new acquisition: veteran running back Dalvin Cook. According to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero, Cook has agreed to terms with the Cowboys and is expected to initially join their practice squad. This development follows a visit Cook made to Dallas earlier in the week, during which he left without a deal before ultimately coming to an agreement.

Currently, the Cowboys' active roster includes three running backs: Ezekiel Elliott, Rico Dowdle, and Deuce Vaughn. With the roster deadline having passed, the Cowboys have yet to announce their 16-man practice squad, but Cook is anticipated to fill one of those spots as he gets up to speed for the season.

Cook, who recently turned 29, is coming off a challenging season. With the New York Jets last year, he struggled to make an impact, averaging fewer than six touches per game. After signing a one-year deal with the Jets in August, Cook ended the season with only 214 rushing yards on 67 carries, no touchdowns, and a long run of just 10 yards. He also contributed 15 catches for 78 yards in 15 games, including one start. Following his release by the Jets, Cook briefly joined the Ravens, where he played in one playoff game, rushing for 23 yards on eight carries but did not appear in the Ravens' playoff loss to the Chiefs.

Drafted in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings, Cook spent his first six seasons in Minnesota, where he amassed 5,993 rushing yards, 47 touchdowns, and 221 receptions for 1,794 yards and five additional touchdowns. Despite a drop in performance last season, Cook’s track record makes him a notable addition to the Cowboys' roster.

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, who has faced Cook multiple times as both the head coach of the Green Bay Packers and the Cowboys, now welcomes him to his team. In their previous encounter last season, Cook's impact was minimal, with just four rushing attempts for seven yards and a five-yard reception in a Cowboys victory over the Jets.

Before Cook’s arrival, the Cowboys' backfield appeared somewhat thin. Ezekiel Elliott, also 29, returned to Dallas this offseason after a year with the Patriots. Dowdle had a career-high 89 rushing attempts last season but has only two games with more than nine carries in his career. Vaughn, a rookie last year, contributed 80 yards from scrimmage in seven games.

The addition of Dalvin Cook could significantly bolster the Cowboys’ backfield depth as they prepare for the upcoming season, offering both experience and a potential spark to their rushing game.
