Facundo Pellistri Secures Permanent Move to Panathinaikos After Four-Year Journey with Manchester United
Facundo Pellistri, the young Uruguayan winger who joined Manchester United back in 2020, has officially signed a permanent deal with Greek club Panathinaikos. This marks the end of a four-year chapter for Pellistri at Old Trafford, where his potential was often hinted at but never fully realized on the grand stage of the Premier League. His move to Panathinaikos offers a fresh start and a new opportunity to establish himself in European football.
Pellistri's time at Manchester United was one of steady development but limited first-team exposure. After joining from Uruguayan side Penarol, he initially struggled to break into the senior squad, leading to loan spells in Spain with Deportivo Alavés. These stints allowed him to gain valuable experience in La Liga, though his impact was often limited, as he failed to score during his time with Alavés. Nevertheless, these experiences were crucial in shaping the player he has become.
The 2022/23 season saw Pellistri finally get his chance under Erik ten Hag, as he made his debut in a Carabao Cup quarter-final against Charlton Athletic. He went on to feature in some significant matches, including a start in the Champions League against Bayern Munich. However, consistent first-team opportunities remained elusive, and he spent the latter half of the season on loan at Granada. There, he began to show glimpses of his potential, scoring twice in 15 appearances and delivering some notable performances, particularly in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Barcelona.

Pellistri’s performances at Granada and his displays for the Uruguayan national team, under Marcelo Bielsa, who called upon him during international fixtures in the United States, demonstrated his growing maturity and readiness for more responsibility. His contributions in the recent Copa America also underscored his development, but it was clear that his future lay away from Old Trafford, where the competition for places is fierce.
Panathinaikos, coached by former Uruguay manager Diego Alonso, recognized Pellistri's potential and were quick to secure his services. The Greek Super League club will offer him the regular playing time that was hard to come by at United, and under the guidance of Alonso, who knows Pellistri well from their time together with the Uruguay national team, the 22-year-old winger will look to reignite his career.
Manchester United agreed to the transfer for a fee reported to be around £5.1 million, with potential add-ons of up to £1.7 million. The deal also includes a buy-back clause valid for the next three years, and United will receive 45% of any future sell-on fee, ensuring that the club remains invested in Pellistri's future success.
As Pellistri embarks on this new chapter in Greece, the move is seen as beneficial for all parties. For Panathinaikos, it's a chance to bring in a talented young player with international experience, while for Pellistri, it's an opportunity to develop further in a competitive league where he can play a central role. Meanwhile, Manchester United can reinvest the funds in their ongoing efforts to strengthen the squad as they aim for Champions League qualification.
The footballing world will watch closely to see how Pellistri adapts to his new environment. If his performances with Uruguay and his brief but promising flashes at Granada are anything to go by, Panathinaikos may have just secured a significant talent, eager to make his mark on the European stage.
