Faruque Ahmed Takes Charge as BCB President Amidst Political and Cricketing Turmoil
In a significant development for Bangladesh cricket, former national captain Faruque Ahmed has been appointed as the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). This change in leadership comes after the resignation of long-standing president Nazmul Hassan, a close ally of the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, amidst a backdrop of political unrest and student-led protests that have shaken the nation.
Nazmul Hassan's departure marks the end of a 12-year tenure that saw him lead the BCB through several highs and lows. His resignation, submitted to the BCB following Sheikh Hasina's exit from power on August 5, 2024, was promptly accepted. Under Hassan's leadership, the BCB navigated through a challenging period, which included the global pandemic and the rise of Bangladesh as a competitive cricketing nation. However, his close ties with the ousted government and his role as Sports Minister under Hasina's rule eventually led to his resignation amidst growing pressure.

Faruque Ahmed, who has previously served as the national chief selector and briefly captained Bangladesh, assumes the presidency at a time of both political and cricketing instability. In his inaugural press conference, Faruque didn't shy away from addressing the challenges ahead, particularly the future of head coach Chandika Hathurusingha. Faruque expressed his dissatisfaction with Hathurusingha's performance, highlighting the team's recent struggles in major tournaments, including early exits from the 2023 Asia Cup, World Cup, and T20 World Cup.
Faruque was critical of the decision to reappoint Hathurusingha in 2023, pointing to the coach's controversial departure in 2017, which had left the team in a precarious position. "It was a mistake to bring back Hathurusingha," Faruque stated firmly, emphasizing the need for a thorough review of the coaching staff and suggesting that the board is considering alternative options.
The new BCB president also addressed the uncertain future of star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, whose political career as a member of parliament under the Awami League has raised questions about his availability for the national team. Faruque emphasized the importance of clarifying Shakib's status, especially with crucial home Tests on the horizon.
Amidst these challenges, Faruque also expressed hope for the return of former captain Tamim Iqbal to the national side. Tamim, who briefly retired from international cricket last year, has been absent from the team since September 2023 but remains active in domestic leagues. Faruque believes Tamim still has much to offer, particularly in the ODI format, and hopes to see him continue playing for a few more years.
Faruque's appointment as BCB president signals a potential shift in Bangladesh cricket, as he seeks to steer the board through a period of transition both on and off the field. With a mandate to address the existing challenges and restore stability, his leadership will be closely watched in the coming months as Bangladesh cricket enters a new chapter.
