ITV Confirms End of Landmark Up Series After 62 Years With Final Film 70 Up
A television experiment that quietly became a national mirror is now reaching its final chapter, as ITV confirms the long-running Up series will conclude with its last instalment, 70 Up, in 2026.
What began in 1964 as a simple but ambitious documentary called 7 Up has followed the same group of people every seven years of their lives. Starting with ten boys and four girls, the series tracked them from childhood into adulthood and eventually into later life, creating one of the most detailed portraits of human development ever captured on film.
Now, after more than six decades, the story is coming to an end. ITV has confirmed that 70 Up will be the final film in the series, closing a run that has become deeply embedded in British television history and widely respected around the world for its unique storytelling approach.
The final chapter is set to revisit familiar faces whose lives have taken dramatically different paths. Viewers will once again see Tony, who once dreamed of becoming a jockey before spending years as a London cab driver. Neil, who imagined a future in space exploration, returns as well, offering a reflection on how early ambition compares with real-world outcomes.

Sue will share her journey through marriage and her long academic career, while Peter’s story continues through his connection with music. Other returning participants include John, Andrew and Suzy, each carrying their own history of expectations, detours and personal reinvention.
The series will also acknowledge those who are no longer alive, including Lynn and Nick, whose earlier contributions remain part of the programme’s emotional core. Their presence is expected to add a reflective and poignant layer to the final episode.
Behind the camera, the project also marks a transition. Following the death of long-time director Michael Apted in 2021, acclaimed filmmaker Asif Kapadia has taken on the responsibility of bringing the series to a close, working with decades of archived material and interviews.
ITV describes the Up series not just as television, but as a cultural record of real lives unfolding over time. With its conclusion now set, 70 Up is positioned as both an ending and a final reflection on how childhood hopes evolve across a lifetime.
As anticipation builds toward its release, audiences around the world are being invited to witness the final chapter of a documentary legacy that has quietly shaped how we understand time, change and human possibility.
